Q: What is LUMI Learning?

A: LUMI Learning is a website that allows children to learn the vocabulary words that will help them succeed academically. A diverse cast of child actors do the majority of the teaching in our sight word and academic term videos.

Q: How can I use LUMI Learning as a teacher?

A: Use LUMI Learning to help you differentiate instruction like never before! LUMI Learning can teach your spelling words of the week, sight words of the week, or unique vocabulary in leveled readers. You can also use LUMI Learning as one of your centers during small groups, or use it whole group to add some variety to your vocabulary lessons.

Q: What is the difference between the Basic and Premium Teacher Account?

A: With the Basic account, a teacher can create up to two WordLists and view up to five LUMI Learning word videos. With the Premium Account, teachers can access all our word videos and all WordLists from the LUMI Learning Community. Premium Teacher account holders can also create classes and groups, and assign different WordLists to different students to be viewed on different dates!

Q: Do I have to download anything to use LUMI Learning?

A: No! You access 100% of our content through LUMILearning.com, which is accessible on any device.

Q: Does LUMI Learning offer different languages?

A: We do not at the moment, but in the future LUMI Learning will offer Spanish content, and possibly word videos in other languages as well. Stay tuned!

Q: Do I have to sign a contract to use LUMI Learning?

A: No, you have the option to subscribe from month to month, which is cancelable at any time, or you can pay for a full year up front and receive a discount.
*Schools and school districts sign yearly agreements.

Q: Does LUMI Learning offer material for grades higher than 5th grade?

A: Not yet! LUMI Learning will eventually have educational content for the intermediary and secondary grades, but we are focusing on Kinder-5th grade right now.

Q: Does LUMI Learning offer other content besides vocabulary lessons?

A: Not yet, but very soon LUMI Learning will offer focused lessons on phonics, other literacy skills, and lessons teaching parents how to establish a rich home-literacy environment.

Q: Can my child be in a LUMI Learning video?

A: We LOVE our community and are always looking for families to get involved. If your own child is interested in starring in a LUMI Learning video and is in the Wichita, Kansas area, let us know at [email protected].

Right now, only parents can submit videos of their own children. If you want to share a homemade video of your own child sharing their own sentence with a sight word, visit our Our Actors page and learn how to share a video with us. We just might be able to use your video in a sight word video or on our social media!

About My LUMI > My WordLists

When you log into app.lumilearning.com, you’ll land on My LUMI where you’ll see My Classes, My WordLists, and My Connections. In the My WordLists tab, you can GET WordLists from the WordList Library or create your own by clicking Create WordList.

About My LUMI > My Classes > Students

Click on My Classes to name your class and click Add Students to add your students. LUMI Learning will generate student usernames.

About My LUMI > My Classes > My Groups

Click on Groups to put students into groups. Click Add Group, enter your group’s name, and see which members of your class are eligible to be in your new group. As you create more groups and add students to them, you will see that some of your students are no longer eligible to be added to an additional group.

About My LUMI > My Classes > Settings

In Settings, you can change the name of your class or delete the class.

About My LUMI > My Classes > Assignments

In Assignments, you can see assignments for your groups or individual students.

Click on a group to see details. Hover over the group name to see the names of the students in the group, and hover over the assignment title to see what words are in the WordList that was assigned. Here, you can also change the date when students first gain access to the WordList, or change how many views are assigned. For students who learn quickly, consider assigning just two views. For students who need more repetition, assign them up to four views. Students will see one complete round of videos before they see the next round. Click Create Assignment to add a new assignment easily. Click the X the delete an assignment.

About My LUMI > My Connections

In My Connections, see who is following you and who you are following. Everyone starts off with Ms. LUMI as their follower and the first person whom you are following. This can be edited, of course. Explore the WordList Library to find teachers or parents whose WordLists you like. Then, simply follow them. If you should want to unfollow them, just click on their profile link and click Unfollow.

Overview of The Resources Tab

The second tab you have is the Resources tab. The first choice is to access the WordList Library, where you can find ready-to-use WordLists. Click on All LUMI Words to see, in alphabetical order, all of the words we have right now in our bank of words and phrases. Click Printable Resources to access resources that are ready to be printed and photocopied. Lastly, you can browse through our FAQs and Tutorials to find answers to any questions you may have.

How to Create a Class

To create a class, go to My LUMI—>My Classes, then click Create a New Class. Enter the Class Name and click Submit. Then, go ahead and click Add Students to enter your class roster, set the student password, and have LUMI Learning generate student usernames.

How to Print Username and Password Cards

Your password cards will be immediately emailed to you once you add your students to your classes and set the class password. You can also always click Email Password Cards when you go to any of your classes and the cards will be emailed to you again.

How to Create Small Groups

If you are a teacher who uses Small Groups, go to the Groups tab in My Classes to add your groups. Click Add Group, enter your group’s name, and see which members of your class are eligible to be in your new group. As you create more groups and add students to them, you will see that some of your students are no longer eligible to be added to an additional group.

How to Create a WordList

To create a WordList simply log onto app.LUMILearning.com and you’ll end up on MY LUMI. From MY LUMI, just click the Create WordList button and you’ll be able to create a unique title for your WordList and add words to it. Be sure to separate your words with commas. Decide whether you want to share your WordList with the LUMI Learning community.

Click the link View All Available Words to see what words LUMI Learning has that you can easily add to your current WordList.

Add any words from All Available Words, finish up your WordList, and click Submit. You’ll then get the words for which LUMI Learning has a video added to your WordList. Any words that LUMI Learning does not have in our bank of words will appear under the Saved Words section of the WordList’s page. When a word is searched for and we don’t have it, LUMI Learning gets a notification that you have searched for the word. LUMI Learning then gets to work on creating the videos most frequently requested by teachers and parents.

How to Assign a WordList

Option 1: To assign a WordList, go to MY LUMI, click on a WordList, and click the option Assignat the top of the WordList.

A window will come up and you can assign the WordList to a group and/or an individual student. Here, also select the number of times a student should watch the word videos in their WordList and the date they should get access to them.

Option 2: Another way to Assign a WordList is from the Class Assignment Page. Simply click Create Assignment and you’ll see a window similar to the one above.

How to Use the WordList Library

Browse through the WordList Library to view WordLists that other LUMI Learning users have created and shared with the community. Click the word GET to add the WordList to your MY LUMI page, where you can further edit it to meet the needs of your students.

Exploring the Student User Experience

When students log-in, they only see MY LUMI and can only click on their current WordLists. If you have assigned WordLists for future dates, those won’t show up in your student’s MY LUMI until the date you chose the students would begin to access their WordList.

How to Edit My Profile and Settings

Hover over your username and you’ll have the option to go to My Profile, Settings, and Feedback. At My Profile, click Edit Profile to edit your photo and bio. Click Settings to see and edit your contact information, and to confirm which type of account you’re currently subscribed. Click Feedback to give us feedback on our product, or a specific video, or anything else!

Edit a WordList from the WordList Library

Once you get a WordList from the WordList Library, you can edit it to further meet your needs. Click the X to delete words, or click Add Words to add more words to the WordList.
